What kind of world is this?
It's kind of crap
This is the funniest thing I've seen for a while: Voldo, a character from the fighting game Soul Caliber, dancing to Nelly's 'Hot in Herre' in the form of a home-made music video.
"The choreographed moves in this recording are all actual game play; no programming was done." ... "Over a week's worth of full-time training and performance went into this production, which sparked more than one comment of "you need a job" (a phrase I'm not all that unused to hearing)."
There are a couple of different versions of this, but the best is linked below. I particularly like the fact that the start of this is done as one long take - the edits come much later; and that it was performed live.
Of course, no idea can last for long - especially online - that isn't co-opted quickly. MTV now has a show dedicated to music video game animations - Video Mods. Thanks to MTV for being brain-dead and having no Mac support for their videos online, so I can't vouch for their quality. The ones I saw on the broadcast show reminded me of the early days of videos, just filming bands singing, rather than taking advantage of the medium. In this case they had programmed the characters to perform dance moves in the setting of the game; so, no creativity there. And they'd co-opted the game studios to program characters from different games together in the same 'video' and then trumpeted this as some hugely important exclusive. It was interesting for precisely one and half songs. Although the idea is a promising one, even the ever-hypeful presenters couldn't couldn't seen to parlay this wafer thin content up into an entire show, let alone an entire series. Still, there are other interesting machinimations out there. I'll post some more links soon.
So, I'm back! This time with some new tools that I hope will make updates easier, and therefore more plentiful. I have several reasons why I've not posted much lately - including a promotion (I seem to be doing two jobs now instead of just my old one), a new camera (which seems to have filled up my hard drive now after realizing that pictures are far more fun to take than to crop and arrange and upload) and an addiction to FIFA Soccer on the Playstation (of which more later). But mainly I've just been a reader and not a writer.
I now realize that I'm still not a writer - but since that doesn't stop 99% of those running blogs, I've decided that I don't care. I've even reached the point that I don't actually care if you've seen the latest 'All Your Base Are Belong To Us' links a million times already - I don't make this site to amuse anyone but myself as an exercise in pure vanity, so I'm even going to re-post all the things you will have seen if you already read BoingBoing, Slashdot et al. just because they amuse me. That, and hopefully the odd interesting photo I've taken. So, without further ado, let the catch-up posting begin.
